Roses & Perennials
Strolling through the gardens you will see many different blooming plants including roses, perennials, and shrubs. We are in the process of bringing the hybrid tea roses along the front fence line back to life. These roses were planted some time ago by a previous owner and we have been researching the names of them. When you visit the gardens, if you happen to know the name of one of the roses, please let us know. Some we have identified are: Mr. Lincoln - a fragrant red, Midas Touch - a fragrant very bright yellow and climbing Angel Face, a lavender semi-double. Since most roses do well in our climate, we have been planting more roses each year, especially fragrant and antique or old garden roses. Our two climbing Cecile Brunner’s planted in 2005 are just about covering our rose arbor. Roses we are adding this year are climbing Devoniensis, Pink Perpetue; climbing Richmond, and Madam Alfred Carriere.
Some of the perennials we have growing for cut flowers include bee balm, black eyed susan, blanket flower, buddleia, butterfly weed, cone flower, coreopsis, delphinium, foxglove, globe flower, hyssop, iris, lavender (of course), lobelia,
penstemen, phlox, red hot poker, salvias, Shasta daisy, sneezeweed, veronica, and yarrows. We also use annuals and a variety of grasses in our floral arrangements.
Shrubs in the garden are used as backdrops for our flowers and also as greenery in floral arrangements. Good examples of some of the shrubs and trees for greens are abelia, ash, citrus, curly willow, euonymous, ferns, flowering plum, hopseed, olive, pittosporum, pussy willow, and westringia.
You are welcome to visit our gardens Wednesday through Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m., but please check our Visiting, News & Events page or call ahead because we are closed occasionally for special events.
